Effective Substance Abuse Prevention Foundations
The North Dakota Prevention Resource and Media Center (PRMC) is a leading source of behavioral health promotion and substance abuse prevention efforts, information and resources in North Dakota.
At the ND PRMC, we apply a behavioral health lens to our prevention efforts, which helps us to draw the connections between substance abuse and related problems and to take the necessary steps to address these problems in a comprehensive and collaborative way. Behavioral health is a state of mental/emotional being and/or choices and actions that affect wellness. Substance abuse and misuse are one set of behavioral health problems. Promoting mental health and preventing substance abuse are critical to both behavioral and physical health.
The North Dakota Substance Abuse Prevention System is data-driven and science-based and follows a public health approach. Both state and community-based processes are guided by the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) http://www.samhsa.gov/spf. The SPF is designed to help states and communities build the infrastructure necessary for effective and sustainable prevention. Effective prevention requires comprehensive and ongoing efforts that promote healthy cultural and social environments.
